The mythology behind Reign simply isn’t as interesting as Reign herself.

But a bigger problem has been the emphasis on the Harun-El rock and all the mystical nonsense that’s brought to the table. That process started with the decision to abruptly kill off Purity and Pestilence in “Trinity,” wasting two perfectly good supporting villains in the process.
Summary of supergirl season 3 episode 1 series#
Unfortunately, Reign’s story is one of several areas where the series went off the rails in recent weeks. That ensured that when Samantha’s dark side finally did become dominant, her downfall felt all the more meaningful and significant. The first half of the season offered plenty of time for the writers to develop her human side and flesh out Samantha’s relationships to Kara and Lena. Reign finally seemed poised to change that. The series has rarely excelled when it comes to villains, even by the inconsistent standard of the rest of the Arrowverse. It is frustrating that Reign didn’t fully live up to her potential in the end.

The early action scenes were impressive in their scope (if less so in the execution of the special effects), but it’s just as well the conflict took on a more intimate approach after that point. This episode would have suffered more if the entire conflict centered around Kara and friends stopping natural disasters and punching Reign and her mistresses. To its credit, at least “Battles Lost and Won” worked most of the global carnage out of its system early on. However, there were enough strong character moments throughout this episode to avoid a totally predictable and bland finish. The somewhat formulaic end to the season is a sign that the series never quite capitalized on the Reign conflict in the way it should. I’ve made this joke before, but it must be really terrible to live in the Arrowverse and know that the arrival of May means some epic disaster is waiting right around the corner. Once again, Kara and her allies confronted a super-powered enemy intent on destroying humanity and claiming Earth for itself. In some ways, Supergirl ended its third season in very familiar territory. Just a quick note to start things off - since I haven’t been doing weekly Supergirl reviews for the past couple months, this review is going to function as a combined season finale review and a look back at Season 3 as a whole.
